Aruba Taxi & Limo Guide (Updated May 2026)

Getting around our "One Happy Island" is part of the fun - and taxis are a great, reliable way to do it! Following a sweeping modernization of the island's transit regulations on May 20, 2026, Aruba's taxi guidelines, fares, and booking options have been updated. Use this official guide to plan your rides, estimate your fares, and learn about our new digital booking options.

How Taxis Work in Aruba: The Basics

  • No Taximeters: Taxis in Aruba do not use meters. Instead, all fares are fixed by zone and destination, regulated strictly by the Government of Aruba.
  • Base Fares Apply to Groups of 1-4: The official base fare covers up to four (4) passengers per vehicle. (Under legacy rules, the base rate covered five passengers, but this has been formally updated).
  • Official TX Licensing: Only vehicles displaying an official "TX" on their license plates are legally authorized to operate as taxis on the island.
  • Payment Methods: Fares are accepted in both U.S. Dollars (USD) and Aruban Florins (AWG). Payments are converted at the island's fixed exchange rate of $1.00 USD = 1.80 AWG. Cash is widely accepted, and digital card payments can be set up when booking through the island's official transport app.
  • In-Car Transparency: To protect passengers, every licensed taxi driver is legally required to permanently display a highly visible QR code linking directly to the official government fare site: taxi.aw.

Standard Rates, Surcharges & Luggage Rules

Make sure you are familiar with these standardized add-on charges to ensure a smooth, surprise-free ride:

  • Minimum Fare: The absolute minimum charge for any taxi trip, regardless of distance, is $10.00 USD (18.00 AWG).
  • Extra Passengers: If your party has five (5) to seven (7) passengers, a surcharge of $3.00 USD (5.40 AWG) is added to the total fare per additional person. Taxis are legally capped at a maximum of seven (7) passengers per vehicle.
  • Flat Surcharge ($5.00 USD / 9.00 AWG): An additional surcharge of $5.00 USD is applied once per trip under any of the following conditions:
    • Sundays: All day.
    • Late Nights: Daily between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
    • Holiday Block: December 24 through January 1.
    • Official National Holidays: New Year's Day (Jan 1), Dia di Betico (Jan 25), Carnival Monday, National Anthem and Flag Day (Mar 18), Good Friday, Easter Monday, King's Day (Apr 27), Labor Day (May 1), Ascension Day, Christmas Day (Dec 25), and Boxing Day (Dec 26).
  • Airport & Hotel Luggage Regulations: Each passenger is allowed one (1) standard piece of luggage and one (1) carry-on (backpack or handbag) free of charge. Any excess bags are charged at $3.00 USD (5.40 AWG) each. Personal laptops, briefcases, and essential medical or mobility equipment (like wheelchairs and strollers) are strictly exempt from excess bag fees.
  • Trunk Use (Non-Airport/Non-Hotel Trips): For trips that do not involve airport or hotel transfers, utilizing the vehicle's trunk incurs a flat, one-time fee of $3.00 USD (5.40 AWG) for the entire trip, rather than per bag.
  • Waiting Time: If you request your driver to wait for you, or if there is a passenger-caused delay, the waiting rate is $1.00 USD (1.80 AWG) per minute.
  • Hourly Vehicle Hire: You can hire a private taxi for island sightseeing at a rate of $60.00 USD (108.00 AWG) per hour, with a strict minimum booking of two (2) hours.
  • Damage & Cleaning Fees: Passengers are responsible for covering repair and deep-cleaning costs if they damage the vehicle or soak the seats. To preserve vehicle interiors, local regulations permit drivers to decline boarding to shirtless, damp, or wet passengers.

Consumer Protection & Dispute Resolution

The Government of Aruba enforces strict transparency measures to eliminate overcharging. If a driver charges you a rate higher than the official government-approved calculations, or if you encounter any operational issues, you should report the incident immediately:

Tip: When filing a dispute, please make sure to note the vehicle's TX license plate number and keep any receipts or booking details handy.
